Two US Musicians To Sue Ed Sheeran For $20m (£13.8m) Over His Single Photograph

Award-winning singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran is facing a lawsuit from a Californian songwriting duo, Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, along with their publishing company HaloSongs claiming “Photograph” was copied from them.

Martin Harrington and American Thomas Leonard claim it has a similar structure to their song, Amazing.
The pair says that Sheeran's ballad has the same musical composition to their track, which was released as Matt Cardle's winning X Factor track in 2010.

Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard say they penned Amazing in 2009.

In documents, that include musical note comparison and chord breakdowns of the two songs, the pair claimed the chorus of Photograph shares 39 identical notes with their track.

The lawyer representing them is the same lawyer who was victorious last year in representing the family of Marvin Gaye in a copyright infringement lawsuit against artists Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams.
‘Photograph’, which was released in 2015, allegedly contains 39 notes that are “identical in pitch, rhythmic duration, and placement in the measure” to their 2012 composition performed by 2010 X Factor UK Winner, Matt Cardle according to NBC.

The court documents say that Photograph has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.
